Golf Day Raises £2051 for Charity

At PBC we are delighted that our Golf Day held in September raised a fantastic £2051 for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Together with other events we have been able to donate £3761 to such a great charity this year.

PBC Golf Day – in aid of Ronald McDonald Charity Houses

What a glorious day to hold a Golf Day. The sun was shining, Overstone Golf Club was in excellent condition and the event was supported by a great bunch of local Businesses and Professionals.

PBC with the support of Overstone Golf Club hosted 12 teams of mixed ability golfers. Scoring was good with a number of players under handicap. Pink was the colour of the day when it came to the Team Ball competition. It has to be said that this received mixed comments. Pressure of the Pink Ball took its toll on 10 out of the 12 teams as only 2 Pink balls made it home.

The day was all in aid of Ronald McDonald Charity Houses and we would like to thank all those who attended and contributed to the success of the day. We will be announcing the total amount raised for Charity soon.

A round of golf always brings out the competitive nature and on the day we had 5 prizes to play for…….

Congratulations to:

Guy Zarins: Nearest the Pin on Hole 4
Phil Hardcastle: Nearest the Pin in 2 on hole 15
Duncan Nicholson: Winner of the Charity Hole draw
Team Ball: Paul Currie, Tom Low, Jonathan Dolby & Danny Roberts

And the Individual Winner ***** PAUL CURRIE ***** with an impressive score of 43

We are looking forward to Next Year and hope to see everyone again for the 2020 Golf day – details to be announced

Abseil Total Exceeds Target

Back in August 2018, Natasha Pink and Jamie Cochrane took part in an abseil event which was organised by the Ronald McDonald charity to help raise much needed funds for families of sick children.

There are 14 Ronald McDonald Houses as close as is possible to specialist children’s hospitals across the country, from Southampton to Liverpool.  They provide accommodation for families whose child is receiving treatment at the hospital, free of charge, so parents can stay close to their children.

PBC are supporting the charity because of the support they have given to Kym Carvell’s family.  Kym’s baby grand daughter, Billie-Marie was born 10 weeks premature with a number of health issues.  In total, Billie-Marie has spent approximately six months of her short life in hospital (she turned two in August), and on almost every one of those days, Ronald McDonald House has provided a room for her parents to stay.

Both Natasha and Jamie really enjoyed the abseil and everyone at PBC are very proud of them.  Natasha said that it was an amazing experience and that she was very grateful to be able to support such an important cause. She is also very grateful to all those that have supported her and Jamie and donated so generously, with the latest donation taking them past the £1,000 target.  It has also taken the total earned this year from all of PBC’s events past £3,250.

If anyone else would like to donate to this very worthwhile cause, and recognise Natasha and Jamie’s bravery, please click onto the link here.

Jamie and Natasha abseil for Ronald McDonald

Here at PBC, we are determined to raise as much money as possible for this excellent cause.  So far we have had a charity craft fair, Kym and Jamie walked 80 miles from London Euston to Northampton and the quiz night.  We also have an extremely popular tuck shop in the office!  To date, PBC have raised an amazing £3,303 in 2017 which equates to keeping the Ronald McDonald House at Alder Hey Hospital open for two whole days and in 2018 we have raised £1,817 so far.

But we’re not stopping there!

Jamie and Natasha have taken on the next charity challenge in August 2018 which is a 500ft abseil down Liverpool Cathedral and they can’t do it without your support!  Jamie and Natasha have set up a JustGiving page so please help us made a difference for the Ronald McDonald House Charity and all the families that use it.

Greens Restaurant was filled with the sound of brains whirring as fourteen teams did battle at PBC’s charity quiz in aid of Ronald McDonald House at Alder Hey.  It was a night which saw the teams discover 12 is the only number which scores itself in Scrabble and 23 is the next number in the sequence 1, 40, 4 and 3.

The winners were Hewitsons (below), with a score of 128 out of a possible 150, with Tollers taking second place only 3 points behind in a good night for the lawyers.

PBC would like to thank everybody who attended and made the event such a success, with £1,799.88 being raised for charity as PBC have covered the costs for the evening.

2017 – A Year of Change

Where has this year gone? It seems to be that every year flies by; why is that?  Age?  Maybe.  But then you think about it.  We never have a break between seasons these days.  With Christmas rapidly approaching advertisers are pushing us to book 2018 holidays and I will not be surprised if shops are selling Easter Eggs by the time this has been read!

Regardless, we are here and what has 2017 been like? In the world of insolvency we were confronted with the biggest change in the way we conduct assignments since 1987, which despite the years seemingly going quickly these days, 1987 DOES feel a long time ago!  The Insolvency (England & Wales) Rules 2016 were an attempt to consolidate, bring the rules into the 21st Century and improve creditor engagement.  Well, two out of three ain’t bad, as the song says.

The PBC Mediation Service started this year and its accredited mediator, Gary Pettit, can boast 2017 was 100% successful in terms of settling each dispute over which he presided, including a £1 million professional negligence claim by a bankrupt against his own Trustee.

So, what lessons have I learned from 2017? Well, there are probably too many (I am always learning) but two key lessons are:

  • Always be prepared to adapt to changes, both in business and in life. Business can be great but it can also be extremely cruel. Whatever you do, do not bury your head and think those problems will go away. Either face them head on or;
  • Take professional and independent advice. It is not something new but when you consider I am currently working with three individuals who all thought they could deal with the UK court system. All three are now bankrupt and face substantial statutory costs (in one of those cases, adding 50% again on top of their original debt). I am looking at ways to extricate them from bankruptcy, which could have been avoided had they faced their demon rather than bury their head.

Away from the day-to-day business Kym Carvell and Jamie Cochrane tested their stamina by walking from London to Northampton in aid of the Ronald MacDonald charity. There is a separate article on how they did so I will not spoil the enjoyment of the readers.

So, on behalf of PBC, may I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy 2018.

If you require any advice or assistance on any insolvency-related matter then please contact Gary Pettit or Gavin Bates at PBC Business Recovery & Insolvency on (01604) 212150.

Charity Presentation

On 9th November Kym Carvell and Jamie Cochrane of PBC Business Recovery and Insolvency travelled up to Ronald McDonald House at Alder Hey in Liverpool to present Denise Byrne from the charity with a cheque for £3,303.48.  The money was raised on their sponsored walk earlier in the year from London to Northampton along with various other events which were run by PBC to support their chosen charity.

The Ronald McDonald House at Alder Hey Hospital accommodates families with sick children being treated at the hospital free of charge.  The home costs on average £600,000 a year to run but normally only receives donations of £450,000 a year and there is no other support towards the costs of the home.  Therefore, the amount raised by PBC equates to keeping the whole home open for 2 days.

Kym’s baby grand-daughter Billie-Marie was born 10 weeks premature with a number of health issues last year and the home provided somewhere for her parents to stay close by at this difficult time.  Billie-Marie has unfortunately had to return to hospitals on a couple of further occasions and once again the home were there to support her parents.

The visit coincided with Billie-Marie attending the hospital for some routine appointments the results of which were extremely positive!  Everyone was also surprised to learn that a leaf on the tree of life at the House is now sponsored by PBC and has a plaque with Billie-Marie’s name on.

PBC will be running further fundraising efforts in 2018, so watch this space for details.
